Bakelite bangles?
Bakelite bangles?

I have just recently realised the beauty and style of bakelite and am trying to pick up a few bits here and there at a reasonable price. I am never sure of course if it is bakelite just by looking at it, so I never buy anything I don't really take a shine to personally. I now have several bangles and a couple of rings that I think may be bakelite?
Some have been bought on ebay and they have stated that it is bakelite in some cases but I haven't performed any tests myself as I don't want to damage anything! I will add some pics for you to look at, and see what yo make of them. I'd be interested to read any comments that people may make. Cheers, Kathleen, from Liverpool, England.

Way to test Bakelite with Simichrome
by: Lesley from Decolish

Hi Kathleen

Thanks for submitting your lovely photos. I really like the ring, I've never seen one like that. It's really hard to tell just from photos as there are so many early plastics, and it could equally be Celluloid. The best way to tell is to get a tube of simichrome, you can buy it on Ebay, and when you rub it on Bakelite it changes from pink to yellow.

The bangles certainly have the colours of Bakelite, but if you want to be sure, have a look at my page on testing Bakelite as well.
